About This Quote

This is a saying that comes from the Old West, where cowboys took night watches. The night watch was based on the belief that animals went to sleep at night and woke up in the morning. A cowboy’s job was to make sure all the animals were asleep when he was on watch. If an animal got up in the middle of the night, he would have to make sure it didn’t become a threat during his watch. It was very important for him to keep an eye out for any dangerous animals that might wake up in the middle of the night.
